Doodling can reduce stress and improve memory — and it’s fun! In this playful and exploratory class, you’ll learn a variety of drawing techniques that spur creativity. You’ll experiment with the various types of marks that can be made with pens, pencils (both colored and water soluble), markers, and ink, and how those marks behave on different types of paper.

We will look at art books and sketches for inspiration, including ideas from teacher and illustrator, Lynda Barry. We will also do a creativity experiment based on the book Creative Thinkering: Putting Your Imagination to Work by social scientist Michael Michalko. We will consider how doodling helps with creativity and memory. You’ll leave the class with all the tools you need to confidently doodle — and even doodle in public!

The class will touch on some of the following drawing techniques:

  • Blind drawing
  • Copying a sketch upside down
  • Using your non-dominant hand
  • Drawing by touch
  • Continuous line drawing
  • Erasing as a drawing tool

As an artist who doodles daily, I’ll teach you how the practice of drawing can be a meditation. I draw in meetings, on newspapers and magazines.
In this interactive and meditative class we experiment making marks on papers using traditional and non traditional materials. We used to meet in the artists studio located in Ballard, Seattle. Now hosted as a Teachable course!
